Characteristics

Personality

As a child, Lee Scanlon and his brother Paul were often abused by their father. This is revealed not only in the two-episode special 'Means and Ends'/'How to Kill a Good Guy' but also in season five, episode 'The Talented Ms. Boddicker' where he promises his senile father that he will never abuse his daughter.

Lee was once working undercover to bring down the Cabrera family cartel. During that time, he became addicted to heavy drugs. Although now sober, he still keeps a bag of drugs in the trunk of his car. It is mentioned in the episode 'Second Opinion' that Lee was an NA sponsor to a man named Gary.

Near-Death Experience

In the episode 'How to Kill a Good Guy', Lee is lured out to Yucca County to investigate the death of a young prostitute whom he believes was killed by his brother, Paul. He calls the Yucca County Sheriff to alert him, not knowing the sheriff murdered the young woman. Paul comes to Allison to tell her, but by the time the EMTs and police show up, Lee is seen dead, bleeding out on the floor of the bathroom. As the EMTs try to resuscitate him, Paul goads him on and taunts him. Standing over his own dead body, Lee tells Paul that he is concentrating on his wife and baby to survive. Paul gets angry, telling Lee that Lynn will spend the rest of her life crying and Leigh will grow up without a father. Lee then reveals that since he is dead, he can see a lot more than he could when he was alive— insinuating he knew he would survive. Not long after, the EMT's are able to shock Lee's heart and bring him back. Paul is then seen alone, yelling impotently at the EMTs to stop saving his brother, but it's too late.

Facts and Traits

  • Lee was originally terrified of becoming a father. He was distant, reluctant, and acted disinterested before he told Lynn that he was actually very excited, but very scared.
  • He likes to crack jokes about Allison's dreams, but in the first season, he is seen mocking and showing disbelief in Allison. As the show progresses, he becomes more understanding of her abilities and learns to trust her more.
  • Before he started dating Lynn, he often referred to her as 'Deputy Doll' in an attempt to flirt with her. It was originally believed that she didn't appreciate his ways, until she revealed that she was, in fact, interested in Lee as well.
  • One of his most frequently used lines in the show is "I don't know what to tell you, Allison."
  • Although we don't see many of Lee's friends, the show often hints that his best friends are his tight circle consisting of Allison and Manuel Devalos.
  • Lee bought an engagement ring for Lynn before he found out that she was finalizing her first divorce. The night that he mentioned it to her, Lynn revealed that she bought herself a ring and wanted him to propose.
